1. Who We Are

VoteAmerica is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization incorporated in California. Our mission is to increase voter turnout across the United States.

This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use our websites, software, and other digital tools (collectively, the "Services"). We refer to VoteAmerica as "VoteAmerica, and "we," "us," and "our" below.

Our Services are available to U.S. citizens who are at least 13 years old. Users who are 13 through 17 may use our pre-registration and voter registration tools. Some features—including making donations—are only available to users who are 18 or older.

  • Your information is accessible only to VoteAmerica and FutureVoter employees and vendors who are operationally required to process it, and they are bound by strict confidentiality obligations.
  • You, or your parent or guardian, may request access to your information or request that it be deleted at any time. See Section 11 for how to make that request.

We encourage parents and guardians to be involved in their teenager's use of our Services.

We may use your information to:

  • Investigate, prevent, or take action against suspected fraud or misuse of our Services;
  • Protect the rights, property, or safety of VoteAmerica, our users, or the public; and
  • Comply with legal obligations, subpoenas, or court orders.

We may use your information for other purposes, but only with your explicit consent at the time it is collected.

6. Information Sharing

We do not sell your personal information.

We do not share the personal information of users under 18 with anyone, under any circumstances, except as required by law.

For users 18 and older, we may share your information only in the following limited circumstances:

6.1 Third-Party Organizations That License Our Software

VoteAmerica licenses its voter engagement software to other organizations (our "customers"). If you are using our tools through a third-party organization's website or platform, that organization may have access to the information you submit through their instance of our software. We encourage you to review that organization's own privacy policy.

If you are using our Services directly through VoteAmerica's own websites and tools, this does not apply to you.

6.2 Election Officials

We share the information required by your state or local election office—such as name, address, date of birth, and ID number—to process your voter registration or pre-registration application. This is the core purpose of our Services.

6.3 Service Providers and Vendors

We may share your information with vendors and contractors who help us operate our Services, such as hosting providers and analytics services. These parties are contractually required to keep your information confidential and may only use it to perform services on our behalf.

6.4 Partner Voter Organizations (Adults Only)

We may share certain information—name, address, phone number, and email—with partner voter organizations to verify or update voter registrations. We do not share the information of users under 18 with these organizations.

6.5 Anonymized and Aggregated Data

We may share anonymized or aggregated data—information that cannot identify any individual user—with researchers, analytics services, and other civic organizations to support our mission and improve our Services.

We may disclose your information if we believe in good faith that disclosure is required by law, court order, or subpoena, or to protect the rights and property of VoteAmerica or the public.

6.7 Business Transfers

If VoteAmerica ceases operations or enters bankruptcy, your information may be transferred as part of that process. Any successor organization would be required to continue treating your information in accordance with this policy.

6.8 SMS Data

We do not share SMS opt-in data or consent with any third parties.

7. Text Messaging (SMS)

If you opt in to receive text messages from VoteAmerica, we will use your phone number only for nonpartisan civic engagement purposes—such as voter registration support, election reminders, and voting-related information.

  • Message frequency may vary and will increase as elections approach.
  • Standard message and data rates may apply.
  • You can opt out at any time by replying STOP.
  • For help, reply HELP or email privacy@voteamerica.org.

We do not share SMS opt-in data or consent with any third parties.

8. Cookies and Tracking Technologies

8.1 What Cookies Are

A cookie is a small text file sent to your device by a web server that allows a website to remember information about your browsing activity. We also use web beacons (also called tracking pixels) in our email communications to measure engagement.

8.2 How We Use Cookies

We use the following types of cookies:

  • Functional cookies: These are necessary for our Services to work properly. They do not track your activity across the internet and are not used for advertising. Examples include remembering returning users and assigning unique visitor identifiers for traffic analysis.
  • Analytical cookies: These help us monitor the performance of our Services—such as page views and unique visitors—so we can improve user experience. The information collected is anonymous and used only for statistical purposes.
  • Third-party cookies: Some pages may include cookies set by third parties such as Google or Microsoft. We do not control these cookies. Please review those third parties' privacy policies for more information.

8.3 Managing Cookies

You can manage or disable cookies through your browser settings. Note that disabling certain cookies may affect the functionality of our Services.

8.4 Do Not Track

Our Services do not currently respond to "Do Not Track" (DNT) signals from web browsers. Because there is no universally accepted standard for interpreting DNT signals, we do not take action in response to them at this time. However, we do not collect information about your browsing activity across other websites.

8.5 Advertising Platforms

We use platforms such as Facebook and other social media services to promote our mission. These platforms may collect information about your browsing activity. You can manage your advertising preferences directly through those platforms.

9. Protecting Your Information

We take the security of your personal information seriously. VoteAmerica is SOC 2 certified, meaning our systems meet rigorous standards for security, availability, processing integrity, confidentiality, and privacy. We are also HIPAA compliant. Our security practices include:

  • Encryption of data in transit and at rest;
  • Role-based access controls and authentication protocols;
  • Regular security audits and vulnerability assessments;
  • Logging and monitoring of system activity; and
  • Secure software development and deployment practices.

While we make every effort to protect your information, no method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure. In the unlikely event of a data breach, we have procedures in place to promptly notify affected users and relevant authorities as required by law.

10. Data Retention

We retain your personal information only as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes described in this policy or as required by law, including applicable election record-keeping requirements.

11. Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Request access to the personal information we hold about you;
  • Request correction of inaccurate information; and
  • Request deletion of your personal information, subject to applicable election recordkeeping laws.

If you are under 18, or the parent or guardian of a user under 18, you may exercise these rights on the user's behalf.

To make any of these requests, contact us at legal@voteamerica.org.

Our Services may contain links to third-party websites. We are not responsible for the privacy practices or content of those sites. Please review their privacy policies before providing any personal information.

13. International Visitors

Our Services are intended for use by individuals located in the United States. If you access our Services from outside the U.S., your information will be transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States. By using our Services, you acknowledge and consent to this transfer. We do not represent that our practices comply with the data protection laws of jurisdictions outside the United States, including the GDPR.

14. Governing Law

This Privacy Policy is governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict-of-law principles. Any disputes relating to this policy are subject to the dispute resolution provisions in our Voter Terms of Service.

15. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The most recent version will always be available at https://www.voteamerica.org/privacy/. The "Last updated" date at the top of this document will reflect when the most recent changes were made. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
